According to the press release, the Early Independence Award, established in 2011, provides an opportunity for exceptional junior scientists who have recently received their doctoral degree or finished medical residency to skip traditional post-doctoral training and move immediately into independent research positions.

Dr. Adam Sonabend, neurosurgeon at Columbia University Medical Center/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is involved in a fantastic program for individuals to receive free MRI’s through the Brain Tumor Foundation’s “Road to Early Detection” project. A van is outfitted with an MRI machine and travels to cities throughout the country to provide these free MRI’s to those that signed up scanning. One of the program’s advisor’s is Dr. Jeffrey Bruce, another one of Columbia University Medical Center’s neurosurgeons.
The results are shared with the individual’s primary care physician and also used for research regarding the frequency of brain tumors in the general population.
